In 2004, Acadian descendants visited Grand-Pré, Nova Scotia. Our ancestors had been deported from their lands in 1755. Many of our ancestors who lived here were also buried here. Sitting near the old willows planted by our ancestors and reflecting on their lives, a cool breeze suddenly blew through the willows. At that moment we felt the spirit of our ancestors. This blog is dedicated to their memory.

Consentino Headstone - Lawrence, Ma

The headstone for Vincenzo Consentino and his wife Maria Orteleva's

Immaculate Conception Cemetery
Lawrence, Massachusetts

Vincenzo Consentino and Maria Orteleva were the parents of my mother-in-law Maria Grazia Consentino and my husband's grandparents.

Vincenzo/Vincent was born in Mistretta, Sicily, Italy in 1856.  He died in Lawrence, Massachusetts 16 April 1940 and is buried at Immaculate Conception Cemetery with his wife Maria.  He was 84 years of age.   Maria Ortoleva was born in 1861 in Mistretta and died in Lawrence on 5 January 1946 at the age of 82.  They married in Mistretta abt. 1889.

Two of their adult children, Felix and Joseph, are buried with them.  Felix was born 13 January 1901 in Mistretta, Italy and died 03 April 1966 in Haverhill, Massachusetts.  Joseph, also known as Peter, was born 15 June 1890 in Mistretta, Italy and died 02 July 1978 in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

There was another person living with Vincenzo and Maria who came with them from Italy and who is often overlooked.  She never married or had children to memorialize her.  Her name was Lucia and she was Maria Ortoleva's sister.  Lucia Ortoleva was born in Mistretta in 1867 and she died in Lawrence in 1943 at the age of 76.
